RefWorks

This guide will provide you with tips and instructions on how to use RefWorks to best manage your references.

Add References

Adding references into RefWorks can be done in multiple ways.

Creating/Adding References

You can create references in 3 ways. In the Navigation bar, click on +Add and select one of the options

  1. "Upload document" or Drag & Drop a file into RefWorks. The system will harvest its metadata (if available) and create a citation for it.
  2. "Import References" either single citations as RIS files, or from the whole library of other citation management systems. RefWorks also allows direct import of your library in Mendeley, however the references will not be sorted in folders and you cannot choose to import certain folders instead of your whole library (the folders in Mendeley will be created in RefWorks but will remain empty).
  3. "Create new reference" manually by filling out the relevant fields.

For more details, refer to the instructional video below by RefWorks.

Exporting from Databases

Many discovery tools and databases are directly linked to RefWorks and allow direct export of references.

HBKU Library Search Portal (Summon)

On the search results page, click on the 3 dots on the right corner  of a selected sources, then choose "RefWorks". If prompted to choose which platform, select "ProQuest RefWorks - Export to the new RefWorks" and you will be redirected to log into your account.

Library Databases

Select the needed source(s) and click on "Export", "Cite" or "Save" or "Send to" features, then choose "RefWorks". If you don't find a direct option to export to RefWorks, download the (.RIS) file then import the file into RefWorks.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar allows direct export to RefWorks by clicking on the quotation marks " under the selected source and choosing RefWorks.

Refer to this video by ProQuest for some examples.

Citing Websites

Websites do not have references exporting options, but RefWorks provides a tool for that purpose: "Save to RefWorks".

If you would like to cite a website, or a news article on a website, this tool will add these references directly into your RefWorks account in one click.

  1. Under Tools, choose Tools  and select Install Save to
  2. Drag the bookmarklet button into your browser as instructed.
  3. Go back to the website of interest, and click on Save to RefWorks button. Log in, if you have not done so.
  4. Review the information collected by the system and update it as needed; you may also choose to "save the content of the website" as PDF in RefWorks by ticking the checkbox under the Reference Type.
  5. Save the reference; it will be added to your RefWorks library under Last Imported.
