Mendeley Reference Manager

This guide helps you step-by-step use Mendeley to manage your sources/references.

Citing in LaTeX

Instead of exporting references one-by-one and adding them to the bib file in your LaTeX editor, it is highly recommended to organize all references in Mendeley and then export them all as one BibTeX file.

  1. Gather your references in one folder
  2. Open the folder
  3. Select All references
  4. Click on Export
  5. Select BibTex

Integration in Overleaf

Reference Manager Synchronization is a premium feature in Overleaf available to HBKU members.

  1. Log in to your Overleaf account.
  2. Go to Account in the top right corner.
  3. Select Account Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the Reference Managers section / Mendeley Integration.
  5. Click on Link for Mendeley Integration (log in to your Mendeley account if you have not done so, or Choose account to proceed).
  6. Select Connect account, when a pop-up window appears, to complete the linking process (you can unlink your Mendeley account at any time.)
"Once Mendeley is linked to your Overleaf account you can import references contained in your Mendeley library and keep those imported references synched with your Mendeley account. If you update reference data in Mendeley you can instruct Overleaf to update (Refresh) the references it has imported—the short videos below show how to refresh references imported from Mendeley (and Zotero)." (Overleaf Website)

Using Mendeley with Overleaf

You can keep the references in your overleaf project synched with your Mendeley account. If you update reference data in Mendeley, Refresh Overleaf to update the references imported.

Mendeley import and synching feature brings in your entire Mendeley library; however, you can import, and sync, a specific group contained within your Mendeley account. So far, Overleaf does not yet support importing Mendeley folders.

Create a group and add your references to it. You can create multiple groups for different set references and projects in overleaf.
