If you feel overwhelmed or confused how to start your research, follow the general research approach:
- Plan your research well. It saves you time, and helps you get a well structured and focused work.
- Decide on the types of information sources that you need and how each type will be used in your research.
- Apply the search techniques to get the most relevant results.
- Review the results and select the most pertinent resources.
- Cite the sources properly in text and in the references list.
In terms of Legal Research, the steps are slightly more specific:
- Define your Legal Research Question
- Understand the area of law in the question by consulting Secondary Sources
- Locate laws in Primary Sources
- Continuously Review Results as you go about your research
- Check Good Laws
In many cases, you might need to search for general sources in addition to legal sources. Using both approaches adequately will yield in the best results.
